So I succumbed and am now an owner of an iphone. All my previous phones have been free Nokias from upgrades so paying for a phone is also a first for me.
I'm not gonna lie. I wasn't a big fan when this gadget came out- who needs another procrastination tool? Not I. I think I already spend too much time on the internet. But two things sold me: Google/Map/GPS and Pandora at your fingertips... okay, and the fact that I didn't have to wait in line like a doofus (I was the only customer in the store). But really, right when I found out there was a Pandora app, I considered getting an iphone just for that alone (because I am so in love with Slacker>Pandora>last.fm, in that order, yes).
So opportunity knocked and told me I can get an iphone for the subsidized price and not the ridiculous price (which I'd probably kick my own ass for later). Why not see what the fuss is all about? Will an iphone really change my life? ;P
While I find many of the iphone's features really convenient than those of a standard cell phone, I somewhat do miss some features of my old Nokia phone. Can I live without some of the features I used to have? Maybe it just takes time getting used to since all I've known is Nokia.
Some thoughts:
- I miss MMS. I used this a lot to take/send photos of random/funny pics to friends. :(
- If I get interrupted while texting, I can't save it to a Drafts folder for sending later. I either have to send it now or start all over later. :(
- Can't forward text to others. I can probably live without this.
- Can't send a mass text message. So I'll get charged for multiple messages sent instead of one sent to many people.
- Lack of camera options. I understand this is not a camera, but still, my old phone had zoom, night mode, sepia/greyscale, crop, etc. I can live without this. Old phone took crappy night shots anyway.
- Youtube but no video recording? I can live without this. Not that I really used the video function on my old phone anyway but would've be nice.
- I upgraded to 2.1, and I must've done something wrong because my text messages disappeared. Do they always disappear when you upgrade? Did I miss a backup step before upgrading? At least I only had 3 "convos" that disappeared.
- I don't like how SMS previews pop up when a new one is received. What if someone is "playing" w/ my iphone and that person reads something they're not supposed to? Baaaad.
- I find texting easier w/ the physical buttons than touch screens. I've been making more typos w/ the iphone- maybe I just have fat fingers or it's something to get used to (as with typing w/out looking at the keyboard and texting with one hand on a standard cell phone).
- No user profiles. I used to have 5 set-ups on my old phone. I can probably live without this.
- The vibrate function is really weak. I've missed a couple calls already because of this.
- Can't save contacts to sim card. I opened a new gmail just for syncing my contacts so I think I should be okay now?
- I really dislike the predictive text function. Is there a way to turn it off? It keeps autocorrecting "zell" to "sell" or "cell". Boo. And my fat fingers can't "x" out the bubble that pops up.
- No copy/paste. My old phone didn't either so I can live w/out it, but would be really convenient for copying/pasting links to messages/emails.
- Contacts would suck but the double-click to Favorites saved it for me.
- Battery life doesn't bother me because my Nokia's battery sucked too. But hopefully I won't need to get a new battery in the next 2 years.
- It's bulkier than my old phone but that's something I knew beforehand. I can live with it.
Apple stuff is known for being user-friendly but I feel like I have a lot to learn (and get used to). I also know that all phones have their quirks, so I'm giving it another week or two trial before I decide to return it or not. I think I have 30 days? I really want to like this phone.. especially if I'll be stuck with it for 2 years (and within those two years, 4 more iphones will probably come out). So far, I think it's a great tool for keeping up-to-date with whatever (NEXTBUS!, weather, news, etc.) and finding resources (restaurants, shops, etc.), but I feel it's less functional as a phone for me. I've considered the Touch, but even that's useless without a constant wi-fi connection, and I don't need another mp3 player.
Are there things I'm overlooking in settings or are there apps I can download that will address some of these issues?
On a side note, my mom wants me to keep the iphone just so she can play with iSlots, which she discovered on my aunt's iphone. HA.
I just posted about the Chocolate Rain guy yesterday and today I find he's in the new Weezer video (together with all the other youtube celebs). Ha!
I joined the masses.
A friend told me she went to a club a couple Saturdays ago and met someone through another friend who happened to know me.
"Sorry, I don't remember his name because I wasn't really paying too much attention. I don't even remember how you got brought up. But it was weird... he said he knew you from your website...? You have a website?"
I wonder who could he be?
